The command amulet of the shield guardian that holds Morgana’s Tower — recovered from Morgana’s own pocket in the tower basement in Session 9, and the object she meant when she wrote that “the guardian answers only to its charm.” Currently worn by Asha.
The party had spent the session hunting for a spoken password. The “charm” was never a word.
What It Does
Identified by Asha in Session 9 — cast free of charge using the spell components found on the tower’s fourth floor rather than a 100 gp pearl. It is a standard Shield Guardian command amulet:
- Bound. While amulet and guardian are on the same plane, the wearer can telepathically call the guardian to come to them, and always knows its distance and direction. Within 60 feet, half of any damage the wearer takes is transferred to the guardian.
- Protection (reaction). When an attack hits the wearer within 5 feet of the guardian, the wearer gains +5 AC against that attack and until the guardian’s next turn — often turning the hit into a miss.
- Spell Storing. A spellcaster wearing the amulet can store one spell of level 4 or lower in the guardian by casting it on the construct; the guardian can later release it with the original caster’s parameters, needing no components.
- The guardian’s overriding priority is protecting the amulet’s bearer — it has no self-preservation instinct and will destroy itself to do so.
It commands only this one guardian. Asha’s study of the amulet confirmed the binding is specific, not general.
How the Party Got Past the Guardian
Asha simply walked up to the construct with the amulet held out in front of her. It scanned her, flashed green, and stood down out of attack posture. The party then filed out the front door behind her, staying close so it read them as one group.
The Bigger Implication
The history check that followed is the reason this amulet matters beyond one tower door. The guardian is an older model of the same constructs standing watch at the Biblioplex — and per Asha, those guardians are stationed throughout the Academy, not just at the library.
Since each amulet binds one guardian, the party inferred that the Academy must keep a control room holding every corresponding amulet. For a S.A.T.O. operation against Academy security, that is a single point of failure worth knowing about.
The party also raised the darker reading: the Academy’s guardians may be the muscle the Arcane Reclamation Initiative sends to seize the Golden Chalice. This amulet will not command those — but it proves how they work, and who built them.
Provenance
Designed jointly by Morgana (the forge) and Verelda (the animating lattice theory) — see Verelda for the correspondence. This is the third guardian of their collaboration, the one whose temperament they finally got right after an earlier model “nearly cleav[ed] the poor delivery boy in half over a mispronounced password.” Verelda’s own letter confirms it was still “holding steady” and politely asking students to state their business years after Morgana built it.
It was in Morgana’s pocket when she died in the White Forest, and came home on her corpse.
