The S.A.T.O. — Students Against Tyrannical Overreach (jokingly shortened to “Satyrs”) is a clandestine group of Academy students drawn from the same cohort. Once classmates, they are now scattered across the various colleges, and they reunited in secret after Asha Nyvani Korré was expelled for researching a forbidden artifact tied to the White Forest.
Mission
They view Asha’s expulsion as an antithetical abuse of academic freedom. Their goal is twofold:
- Discover why the topic is forbidden — what the Academy is hiding about the White Forest artifact and the fourth magic.
- Clear Asha’s name and restore her standing.
The Satyrs are the inside operatives — students embedded across the colleges (and even, in Tobin’s case, undercover in Academy administration). Because they cannot move freely without drawing the Academy’s attention, they recruited an outside adventuring arm: The Fallen, already Asha’s allies and proven capable.
The Safehouse
To bring the party in without being tracked, the S.A.T.O. drugged them with sleeping wine — not out of malice, but so the group could travel undetected. The party woke, unrestrained and with all gear intact, in the basement of Myrna Nor’s family vacation beach house in Lathen, which now serves as the group’s safehouse. Members can return there via teleport runes.
Members
All but Simone crossed paths with the party back at the Academy in Session 3 — though none revealed their connection to each other or to Asha until the Lathen safehouse.
| Member | College / Post | Role | Party’s prior contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myrna Nor | Lorehold | Leader / organizer; provides the safehouse |
| Simone | (unknown) | The brains — the group’s most advanced mage; built the map of magic | Only glimpsed in the Biblioplex — not formally met until Lathen |
| Tobin | Arcane Reclamation Initiative | Undercover inside Academy administration | Met as the Fire Jolt Café / Initiative appraiser (Session 3) |
| Rosie | Lorehold | Researcher — history books on the White Forest |
| Ersmatok Rostch | Witherbloom | Magic-labs / horticulture; theatrical streak |
| Quintilius | Prismari | Performance & dead languages (Drama Guild) | Talked with Úlfr in the Biblioplex (Session 3) |
Satyr Rolls — Remote Tasks (Session 8)
Once The Fallen left the students behind at campus and set out north, the S.A.T.O. became usable as remote “hirelings” via a mechanic the table calls Satyr Rolls:
- Each in-game day, any student assigned a task rolls a d100 against a hidden target number.
- Task difficulty sets the starting target and how fast it drops each day (easy: start ~50, fall ~10/day; hard: start ~90–95, fall ~2/day). Some tasks may be secretly impossible — the number never drops, forcing the party to eventually reassign that student.
- Tasks must fit each student’s specialty (see the Members table), and are only ever things the party could do themselves — this offloads legwork without removing player agency.
- Work is assigned only via the Sending Stones — one student per day, and doing so spends the stones’ single daily use.
Standing assignments (from Session 7 → tracked in Session 8):
- Tobin — investigate what and how many the “Sinful Spoils” are (and now, watch for the dress/lance/book/chalice the party’s dreams flagged).
- Simone — trace who donated the star-tablet Asha translated. (The DM hinted the party may already hold the answers in visions and books they’ve been sent.)
Session 10 Results (August 26, 2026)
| Student | Task | Roll |
|---|---|---|
| Tobin | What and how many are the Sinful Spoils? | Success — “Knows of four Sinful Spoils. Spear, book, chalice, dress. They think Seeker already has one.” |
| Simone | Who donated the star-tablet? | Failed again — still no result, ever |
Tobin’s new assignment: “What is the Academy’s plan to get the chalice back from us?” — counter-intelligence against his own office, the Arcane Reclamation Initiative, with ~15 days on the clock.
Queued but not yet sent: a question for a second Satyr about whether the yellow divine speck on the map of magic moved with the party when they carried the Golden Chalice north — i.e. whether the map can be used to track them. See Simone and Types of Magic.
(The party is starting to wonder aloud whether Simone’s task is one of the secretly impossible ones.)
Session 12 Assignments (September 23, 2026)
Coming out of the WitchCrafters’ chalice report, the party lined up a new round of tasks via the Sending Stones. See Session 12 Recap — Something from Nothing > Word to the Satyrs.
| Student | Task |
|---|---|
| Ersmatok Rostch | Is magic conserved? Can it be created or destroyed, or only change form? Once a type of magic exists, can it change type? |
| Myrna Nor | The history of Marseille |
| (Satyr not recorded) | White Forest lore, specifically any magic that would stop someone from entering it |
| (Satyr not recorded) | Venus’s enemies |
| Tobin | (ongoing) The Oracle (Hall of Oracles) |
| Simone | (ongoing) The star tablet |
(No results reported yet. The recap doesn’t say which Satyrs took the White Forest and Venus questions, or how the new tasks fit the one-student-per-day limit on the stones.)
An outsider knows Simone’s spell. When Genni suggested adapting Simone’s sand-map spell to hunt for other Sinful Spoils and offered to reach Simone through the party, Madame Verre cut in: “That won’t be necessary. I know the spell.” The guild will try it themselves. Verre also confirmed that the Great Cataclysm began in the northern mountains of the Endymion Empire and travelled southeast, which matches the green line on Simone’s map.
