The Whispering One is the working name for Leif’s warlock patron, an entity that reached out to him while he meditated in the Purodetapo Forest, within the path of the Great Cataclysm. The name was coined by Úlfr in Session 7, drawn from a Norse-flavored belief among his people in a time before names, when older, vast powers “spoke the world” before the gods carved it into things that could be named.

Its true name is Sorath (spelling as heard — unconfirmed), learned by Leif from Howl in Session 12. Per Madame Verre, it is not of this world: a being from another plane, world, or dimension that most likely came into Astrodia through the Great Cataclysm’s rift, and that is probably living in the Purodetapo Forest. What it wants with Leif is unknown. See Session 12 below.

What Is Known

  • It contacted Leif during meditation, in the Great Cataclysm’s path. Leif never knowingly agreed to a pact. (Revealed in Session 12: Verre’s reading is that Leif unknowingly made a pact with something not of this world.)
  • Leif experiences it only as whispers in a language he cannot understand, heard occasionally in his head.
  • Its language matches the creature imprisoned in The Orb — directly tying it to the mystery of The Fourth Magic (the green, undisclosed magic that traces the Cataclysm’s path).
  • Naming it was framed as a first step toward understanding the entity rather than merely being spoken to by it.

Leads Being Pursued

  • Drolta (a fellow warlock) will ask her own patron, Nephthys, for information.
  • Úlfr prayed to his goddess for the entity’s true name.
  • The Orb and its imprisoned creature remain the clearest physical link.

Session 8 — It May Be Reaching Through Howl

In a dream on the road north, Leif experienced his usual nightmare — everything turning yellow, the Whispering One’s untranslatable voice in his head — but this time the voice issued from his familiar, the owl Howl, whose eyes went completely yellow. Leif now fears the entity is trying to reach through, speak as, or take his familiar (his Pact of the Chain companion). Drolta urged him to make consulting Nephthys a priority. This is the first sign the Whispering One may act through a vector other than direct whispers.

Session 11 — Madame Verre Is Looking Into It (September 9, 2026)

Madame Verre, head of the WitchCrafters, agreed to investigate the Whispering One — for free, unrequested, and having asked nothing in return. She summoned Leif to her office alone, cleared the room, asked him whether he had told her “everything ever,” asked a great many further questions, and answered none of them.

Leif volunteered a great deal in that conversation, including The Fourth Magic.

What she took as her working material was his staff and its glass orb — the object Howl brought him in the Purodetapo Forest, the same forest where the Whispering One first reached him. Verre’s reaction to it: “I think there’s something very special about that.”

The party’s reaction to the arrangement was near-unanimous alarm. Aren: “Be wary of what she might request of you.”

And Then Someone Else Recognized Howl

The same week, Aleister the Invoker — a man who summons beings from outside Astrodia — looked at Howl in a Pentamarone alley and said “I do know what this is, then.” He would not say what.

Three separate powers have now taken an unusual interest in that owl: the Whispering One (Session 8, speaking through her), Madame Verre (via the orb Howl brought), and Aleister. See Howl. (Revealed in Session 12: Howl is Sorath’s servant, and Aleister recognized her because he has fought Sorath before.)

Session 12 — It Has a Name (September 23, 2026)

After a private audience with Madame Verre (held with Howl present, at Leif’s choice), Leif gathered The Fallen in a private room, ran the water to cover their voices, and told them what he had learned. Howl told him the name.

The Whispering One’s name is Sorath. (Spelling as heard — unconfirmed; confirm with Emily/Tommy.)

  • Howl is a servant of Sorath.
  • Aleister the Invoker has fought Sorath before. That is why Howl reacted to him with rage and then submission, and why he recognized her immediately. Leif: “I don’t know if he’s also my enemy, but now he’s really my enemy.”
  • Per Verre, Leif unknowingly made a pact with something not of this world, a being from another plane, world, or dimension, which somehow reached Astrodia and is probably living in his home forest, the Purodetapo Forest. That is the same forest Leif told Aleister about.
  • How it got here: the Great Cataclysm was caused by mortals opening a portal to another world, and other things came through with the otherworldly magic (The Fourth Magic). Sorath is probably one of them. (This part Verre asked Leif not to share; it is kept within the party at Verre’s request.)
  • Can Howl help him contact it? Yes, but not yet. If Leif opens his mind, he will be able to reach it “at another time.” He admitted that in most of his dreams he has been trying to run away.
  • What does it want with him? Howl is not at liberty to say. Still unknown.

Aren had never heard of an accidental, non-consensual pact; the party wondered whether that is a trait of the entity itself.

First Appeared

Named in Session 7 (July 15, 2026), at the S.A.T.O. safehouse dinner in Lathen, when Úlfr fulfilled Leif’s quest to name his patron. The patron’s existence was first exposed in Session 6 (May 31, 2026), when Simone’s map of magic revealed Leif to be a warlock. Its true name, Sorath, was revealed in Session 12 (September 23, 2026), along with its otherworldly nature; what it wants remains unknown.
