Genni is the WitchCrafters’ knowledge-seeker — the guild’s scholar and bookworm, described by her own colleagues as “the smartest of us here.” Her study in the Pentamarone guild hall doubles as the guild library. She is helpful, curious, a little overwhelmed, and — as far as the party could tell — honest.

Session 10 — The Chalice (August 26, 2026)

Dolly brought The Fallen to her when they came to the guild hall asking for an appraisal of the Golden Chalice.

What She Couldn’t Do

She cast Identify and hit the same wall as everyone else — the third failure, after the Academy and the party’s own attempt.

“I’m sorry. There’s some non-detection magic. I can’t quite figure out what exactly it is.”
“How often does this happen?”
“Not often, to be quite honest.”

What She Worked Out

Pressed on what she would do with it, Genni produced the single most valuable finding of the session:

The nondetection is not a spell cast on the chalice. Dispel Magic would do nothing. It appears to come from the chalice itself — “almost like the chalice is casting non-detection constantly, on itself. Which I don’t really know how that works.”

What She Knew

  • “The Sinful Spoils” — her ears visibly perked at the phrase. She went through her books and produced the title “the Seeker of the Sinful Spoils” on her own, independent of the Academy. Beyond the name, nothing. (Confirms the name circulates outside Academy records — see The Seeker of the Sinful Spoils.)
  • The White Forest — she knows the curse, which threatened Pentamarone before it receded, but little of the forest’s history. One thing she did offer: rumor of a coven of witches who lived inside it — the third independent source to say so.
  • The city’s founder — confirmed the town was founded by one of the Magistus, and that Rellyona is dead: “She’s no longer with us.”
  • On the Academy — diplomatic. Fellow scholars, mutual respect, magic as academic study versus creative expression; “some say they have radical overreach, but they’ve also held out against the Endymion Empire.”
  • On the Endymion Empire — when Aren said the Empire was worse, Genni answered “Yes. But I would know” — and left before anyone could ask what she meant. Likely a refugee, like much of the city. Unresolved.

Two Things the Party Found Out About Her

  1. Asha cast Detect Thoughts on her. Surface thoughts only — Asha declined to probe deeper, since Genni would have detected it. The read came back clean: Genni genuinely does not know what the chalice is, and was already intending to take the question to Madame Verre. She was not concealing anything.
  2. There is a safe under her desk, and on it — as on her own staff — is the symbol of the magic the Endymion Empire uses. The party’s benign reading is that this is where the guild stores its Keystones, needed to cast legally outside the city’s borders. The uncomfortable reading is that the guild’s independence is a front. Unresolved either way.

How It Ended

Genni went to Madame Verre, came back with “she doesn’t know either — best of luck to you all,” and then watched the party drink from the chalice and fill her library with cats, a duplicate chalice, a stranger’s mother, and the exploded remains of a horse.

She was standing wide-eyed and frightened in the courtyard a few minutes later when Madame Verre paralyzed everyone — and stepped aside to let her through.

Session 11 — Out of Her Depth, and Then Useful (September 9, 2026)

She spent the opening of the session bewildered. Madame Verre had paralyzed six strangers in the courtyard on Genni’s report, and then blamed her for underselling it:

“Genni did such a bad job of explaining how interesting this chalice was.”

Genni, walking behind the throne: “I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s happening. This is very—”

She was then assigned to the records team with Marka: search every book, history, and account in the guild for the Sinful Spoils, or for any chalice able to manifest physical copies. Aren and Asha worked with them through the research montage.

Her Past, Second-Hand

Genni didn’t come to the tavern. Her colleagues talked about her anyway, when Asha asked about the Endymion Empire symbol on her staff and safe:

“Genni doesn’t really like to talk about her past. We think she came from somewhere pretty close to the Citadel. She has no family here, to our knowledge. She came here all on her own.”

Asked outright whether she might be a spy, they were entirely comfortable: no. She has been nothing but good to them. She is simply anxious, timid, and slow to open up.

Her Past, First-Hand

Asha asked her directly during the research, and Genni answered without much resistance:

  • The triangle on her staff is the symbol of the power stones — the Keystones the Empire’s magic engineers use.
  • She grew up very close to the Citadel, the Empire’s capital, “raised underneath their governance” — so Empire magic is “baked in, whether good or not,” to how she casts. She first learned magic using power stones and has since moved away from them, tapping her own magic instead.
  • “I don’t want to erase the past, per se.”
  • She still has family there. A nod, nothing more.
  • She has not been back in a long time.
  • She is not related to the Emperor — “I’m not, technically, no” — and changed the subject immediately after: “Let’s just get back to the books and try to figure out this chalice, huh?”

Consistent with a refugee, and with her Session 10 line “Yes. But I would know.” Still nothing that explains why she left. (Still true after Session 12: every other WitchCrafter was open about why she came to Pentamarone; Genni alone still isn’t.)

Session 12 — The Report (September 23, 2026)

Seniority

Per the guild’s own account, Genni is the second most senior WitchCrafter, behind Haine. She is still the only one who won’t say why she came.

The Truce, Per Verre

While the others were in the alley, Aren asked what deal keeps the Empire off Pentamarone. Genni answered, taking Madame Verre’s word “because I trust her a lot”: Rellyona and the Emperor parted ways after stopping the Great Cataclysm but kept a deep mutual respect, and the Emperor has never encroached on the city, to honor her legacy. See Pentamarone.

”Monster”

When the party came back and described Aleister’s summon, Aren saw Genni perk up at the word “monster.” She asked what kind, went quiet at the answer, and started slipping away, saying Madame Verre should know. Aren followed; Úlfr talked his way in behind them (“I saw it firsthand” — Persuasion 14). Genni had only been keeping the head of the guild informed.

Afterward Úlfr apologized for suspecting her:

“I should never question your honor.”

She accepted gracefully.

Presenting the Findings

On the fourth night of research, around eight or nine, Genni announced she had put everything together and delivered the guild’s report in Verre’s office — after starting to disclose the guild’s funding sources and being told to get on with it. Her team’s section was the history (with Marka, Aren, and Asha): a white-dragon-worshipping clan’s ritual object from the Great Ravine of Caelwyrm. The full findings are on Golden Chalice.

Her summary was the headline of the night:

The chalice generates something from nothing.

“And I think that is what makes it sinful. From our best ability, we believe that this object violates the laws of nature — and specifically, quite appropriately, the domain of the Agent of Creation.”

She also explained the contrast with Red’s Alchemy Jug, which only seems to make liquid from nothing.

Against Using It

Before Verre gave her judgment, Genni made one more point:

“Given the effects the chalice has on its users and the nature of it, I don’t think it should be used for what you want to use it for.”

Verre agreed, and returned the chalice. In the Q&A Genni suggested adapting Simone’s sand-map spell to hunt for the other Spoils, and offered to contact Simone through the party — before Verre announced she already knows the spell.
