A fourth, previously undisclosed type of magic in Astrodia, revealed by Simone’s enchanted magic-map during the S.A.T.O. meeting (Session 6, May 31, 2026). On the map it shows as green sand, distinct from arcane (white), higher-being (red), and divine (yellow). See Types of Magic for the full comparison.
What Is Known
- The newest magic. In the age ordering of the four magics, the Fourth Magic is younger than arcane — which itself only became something mortals could wield after the Severance. (Order from oldest to newest: divine → higher-being → arcane → fourth.)
- It traces the path of the Great Cataclysm. The green sand pours out in a line matching the cataclysm’s exact route: from the northwest of the Endymion Empire, running southeast through the Purodetapo Forest, down to the Prana Mountains.
- It secretly powers civilization. This unknown magic currently underpins every major civilization in Astrodia — and yet it is undisclosed to the public, barely studied, and no one in power is talking about it.
The Open Mysteries
- Why does it appear off the cataclysm’s path? The magic also surfaces in hotspots that do not lie along the cataclysm’s line. If the Fourth Magic was simply left in the cataclysm’s wake, these stray hotspots make no sense.
- What is its source? Newer than arcane and tied to a near-apocalyptic event, its origin is entirely unaccounted for. (Revealed in Session 12: per Madame Verre, via Leif, it is magic that isn’t of this world, which leaked into Astrodia through the portal that caused the Great Cataclysm. See below.)
- Leif Kalanchoe is drawn to it. When the green sand spilled across the map, grains crawled toward Leif — mirroring the way the divine (yellow) sand crawled toward the Golden Chalice. Leif hails from the Purodetapo Forest, directly in the cataclysm’s path, and has been hearing voices he cannot understand (the same language as the creature trapped in the orb). The connection between Leif, his possible patron, and the Fourth Magic is unresolved. (Largely explained in Session 12: his patron, Sorath, is an otherworldly being that probably came through the same rift and probably lives in the Purodetapo Forest.)
Session 10 — Standing On It, Not Looking (August 26, 2026)
A misfired teleport put The Fallen in Pentamarone — one of only two green-magic hotspots that don’t sit at a seat of power, and the single most investigable anomaly on Simone’s map.
They spent two in-game days there: shopped its market, slept at its docks, walked into the WitchCrafters guild hall, and interviewed the guild’s own scholar at length about a chalice.
Nobody asked about the green magic. Aren’s standing hypothesis — that the WitchCrafters may have learned to harness the fourth magic, and that this is what keeps the Endymion Empire off their walls — remains completely untested despite the party having been inside the building.
(A partial excuse: they had no map with them to check colors against, and spent much of the second day trying to remember which color meant what.)
Session 11 — Madame Verre Knows (September 9, 2026)
Leif told Madame Verre about the green magic, unprompted, in a private conversation in her office. His stated reason: “I just felt this desire to be honest with her, since she’s been so accommodating.” The party’s reaction ranged from concern to open accusations that he’d been replaced — nobody has yet checked whether the desire was his own.
When Úlfr came separately to ask what kind of magic the WitchCrafters actually use — arcane, divine, or otherwise — Verre opened with “you know, I just had this conversation with Leif” and then said almost nothing:
“We don’t use any higher-being magic. We have great honor for the Solemn Pantheon, but we just happen to use the natural magic that flows around us. Whether that be arcane, whatever it may be.”
Úlfr’s insight: she knows he’s holding something back, and she is meeting him exactly where he stands and no further. Not lying, not forthcoming.
The green anomaly over Pentamarone is still unexplained — and the head of the guild sitting on top of it now knows the party knows about it. Given that a very small number of people in the world are aware of the fourth magic at all, that list just grew by one of the more powerful names on it.
Session 12 — Magic from Another World (September 23, 2026)
In a private audience, Madame Verre told Leif something she asked him not to share. He shared it with The Fallen behind a closed door, and it is kept within the party at Verre’s request:
The Great Cataclysm was caused by a group of people opening a portal to another world. The rift let magic that isn’t of this world into Astrodia, and other things came through with it.
The party’s conclusion: the fourth magic is otherworldly magic. It runs along the Cataclysm’s path because it leaked in through the rift. Leif’s patron, Sorath, is probably one of the things that came through.
That night at the fireworks festival, Leif asked Verre the follow-ups:
- Where did the Cataclysm begin? In the northern mountain range of what is now the Endymion Empire, traveling southeast across Astrodia, matching the green line on Simone’s map.
- Was the rift ever healed? “Oh, yes, the Magistus did what they had to do to seal the rift.” (“Ooh. I don’t think I was supposed to say that.”)
- Is the leftover green magic from the original leak? Yes. To her knowledge it is still present across Astrodia.
Still open: why the magic also appears in hotspots off the Cataclysm’s path (including Pentamarone); how it came to power civilization; whether the seal holds. Ersmatok Rostch has been asked whether magic is conserved and whether, once it exists, it can change type (results not yet reported). The party has also wondered whether Dogmatika’s new god and saints came through the rift too; that is speculation only.
Significance
The Fourth Magic is the central mystery the S.A.T.O. hope to crack — and a likely thread connecting the Great Cataclysm, the forbidden research that got Asha expelled, and the question of why the Academy shows no spike in any of the three known magics.
